Manzanillo & Costa Alegre
Manzanillo
Manzanillo is a resort town of contrasts located between Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco on Mexico’s sunny Pacific Coast. Although its primary industry is the port, which is the largest Pacific port in Latin America and an important entry point to the United States, growing tourism has seen the rise of several five-star hotel properties and a wide range of activities for sports enthusiasts and culture seekers.
Named after the manzanilla (chamomile) trees that once populated the surrounding Sierra Madre hills and were used in building Spanish galleons that sailed for the Philippines and the far East, Manzanillo first rose to fame during the 1980s after Dudley Moore and Bo Derek romped on the Las Hadas beach in the movie “10”. Since then, a lively tourist center with a dining and nightlife options, bustling beach side markets, and plenty of ecotourism-oriented activities have emerged.
Today, Manzanillo is a thriving resort town surrounded in natural beauty that retains the quaint feel of old-world Mexico and a laid-back essence not found in more developed tourist destinations.
Sports enthusiasts enjoy a wide range of eco-adventure activities along the Sierra Madre foothills, on the golden beaches of Peña Blanca, and in the deep blue Pacific that surround the twin bays of Manzanillo. Several nearby golf courses offer world-class manicured greens in spectacular, tropical settings. Visitors can also satisfy their taste for local culture in various excursions to fruit plantations or inland to Colima, the magical colonial capital that rests in the shadow of two volcanoes.
